Mr. Albert Thornton

THORNTON, Mr. Albert - Age 56, made his transition Saturday, February 11, 2017 at his residence. Family hour 10:30 Monday, February 20, 2017 at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Rd., with funeral service at 11am. Pastor Patrick W. Sanders Sr. host pastor, Pastor George Wilkinson officiating, Pastor Kevin Thompson presiding. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd., Holly, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30am Monday. Mr. Thornton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10am-6pm Sunday, with family present from 4pm-6pm. Albert Tyrone Thornton was born June 30, 1960 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Elder John E. Thornton and First Lady Edradean Thornton. Albert was the younger brother to Edward L. Thornton and the older brother to Lorrie V. Leonard and Lonette L. Henderson. Albert accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age when he became a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. L. W. Owens and Bishop Odis Floyd. While attending New Jerusalem, Albert sang in the youth choir and was a member of the Sunday School and usher board. Albert attended Scott Elementary School, Whittier Junior High School and Flint Central High School. During his youth, he played ice hockey, basketball and football. In June, 1979, Albert joined the United States Air Force where he played on their competitive baseball and basketball teams. He remained on active duty with the Air Force for 13 years. Before his honorable discharge, Albert served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm and earned multiple prestigious honors and awards including the Air Force Achievement and Good Conduct medals, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Long and Short Tour Ribbons and the Southwest Asia Service Medal. While in the Air Force, Albert became a Personnel Specialist. He continued his studies in Human Resources while attending classes at Kellogg Community College and Mott Community College. Albert leaves in God’s care, daughters, Nicole Thornton, Tiffany Thornton, Keysha Thornton (Eric) and Private Syreeta Thornton, all of Flint, Michigan; sons, Staff Sargent Albert Thornton of Little Rock, Arkansas Air Force Base, Airman Jacob Grubb of Statesboro, Georgia and Matthew Thornton of Flint, Michigan; father, Elder John Thornton of Flint, Michigan; brother Edward Thornton (Phyllis) of Indianapolis, Indiana; sisters, Lorrie Leonard of Chicago, Illinois and Lonette Henderson of Reseda, California; 10 grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and a multitude of friends, including special friends, Mattie Thornton, Lesia Thornton, Teresa Shoultes, Yana Evans. And Marie Murphy. Albert was preceded in death by his beloved mother, First Lady Edradean Thornton.
